  • Eligibility

    All full-time undergraduate students

  • Description

Testing and assessment of reading skills are offered both individually and as part of various courses and programs. Programs and workshops are available to identify and improve reading skills.

Consider whether you have any of the following difficulties or concerns.
    Do you...

    ...have difficulty finishing reading assignments?
...have difficulty understanding or being able to explain what you have just read?
...have difficulty with the vocabulary in your reading assignments?
...have any concerns about reading speed or comprehension?

    We have...

...diagnostic testing to help determine reading rate, vocabulary level and comprehension level.
    ...follow-up to the testing.
...self-paced, individualized techniques for improving reading rate, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.
...guidance and follow-up for academic challenges brought about by reading difficulties.
...note-taking and study strategies for more effective reading comprehension.

    I. Reading Assessment

The Center for Academic Enrichment and Excellence administers the Nelson-Denny Reading Assessment to help students evaluate their vocabulary level, reading comprehension level and reading rate.

    • The assessment takes approximately 45 minutes to complete.
    • Students must be here at the time the test is scheduled to start.
    • Late arrivals will not be admitted once the test begins.

If you have a legitimate conflict (such as class or work) and cannot make the scheduled test time, call 231-5499 to arrange a time to take the Nelson-Denny. After completing the assessment, you will make a follow-up appointment with the program coordinator to discuss the scores and possible strategies for improving reading effectiveness.

    II. Reading Assistance

If you would like assistance with your reading, you can become involved in the Reading and Study Assistance Program. This program gives you and opportunity to meet with a trained Reading & Study Assistant (RSA) to strengthen your reading skills. You will meet with your RSA 2 to 3 times per week, for a one hour reading session. During your reading session, you will read the textbook of your choice and practice selected reading strategies while the RSA observes and assists you when necessary. The reading sessions meet in 110 Femoyer Hall. Interested students should complete a Participant Information Sheet and submit it to the program coordinator, electronically or in person to 110 Femoyer Hall. An appointment with the program coordinator will be necessary before you begin the reading program.

Note: You do not have to take the Nelson-Denny Reading Assessment to participate in the reading program.
